About The Challenge
In 2001 the Quintessence Breastfeeding Challenge started in the Canadian province of British Columbia with 856 babies and their mothers at 26 sites. By 2011, there were 4,466 children in 16 countries. The Breastfeeding Challenge continues to grow globally as additional people join in. Breastfeeding and donor milk-banking need support around the world. This year we would like to see the number of participants increase dramatically. Do your part, join us – organize a site – big or small! Every breastfeeding child counts in the final numbers!
2014 Challenge Results
In 2014 there were 4,590 children and hundreds of adults in 10 countries who took part in the Breastfeeding Challenge. Sites varied in size and location, but it was a fun event for all. When the Quintessence Breastfeeding Challenge was first undertaken in 2001, we did not realize that a 15 years later public breastfeeding would still present a major challenge for many women. The Breastfeeding Challenge is one strategy to help spread the word globally that breastfeeding is normal and an important strategy for child and maternal health. Truly, the road to lifelong health begins with breastfeeding.
